Tanzania is situated in East Africa just south of the equator. It is one of the five countries in East Africa. Mainland Tanzania lies between the area of the Great Lakes of Victoria, Tanganyika, and Nyasa and the Indian Ocean, and has about 1,400 kilometers of coastline. Tanzania encompasses 945,087 square kilometers, including 59,050 square kilometers of inland water. The island of Zanzibar comprises of 1,657 square kilometers, and the island of Pemba about 984 square kilometers.
Tanzania has the largest population in East Africa, inhabiting about 44 million people in mainland Tanzania and 1.2 million people in the Island of Zanzibar.
There are over 120 ethnic tribes in Tanzania, majority of which are of Bantu origin. All Tanzanias are unified through speaking one local national language – Swahili.
