Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) has entered
an agreement with four firms that will offer various services to multinational
companies dealing with oil and gas exploration in Mtwara region, Southern
The agreement signing event took place over the
weekend in Dar es Salaam.
EPZA is developing a 10 hector area which is part of
Mtwara Freeport zone.
The 10 hector area is part of a 110 hectors of Mtwara
Freeport area that has been designated by the government for investment
Specifically, the 10 hectors are being developed into
what is called Oil Field Supply Base where various companies will be allocated
land to set up infrastructure needed to service companies now engaging in oil
and gas exploration in Mtwara region including British Gas and Start Oil.
The EPZA Director General, Dr. Adelhelm Meru told
journalists after the signing that the event marks an important stage in the
establishment of the Oil Field Supply Base.
He mentioned the four companies
as Schlumberger Seaco Inc from
United States of America, Altus Tanzania Ltd from Singapore, Tans Ocean
Industries and Services LTD from Dubai and Lenna from Iran.
Other three more
companies will sign the agreement next week.
Dr. Meru noted that the
process to get the companies started in 2010 after firms engaging in gas and
oil exploration requested for such service providers.
'' These companies have
experience and required expertise, '' he said.
He explained that the coming
of the multinational companies that will serve oil and gas exploration firms in
Mtwara will greatly help stimulating other sectors in the region such as hotels
It is expected that the
companies will build huge workshops for servicing gas and oil equipment used in
The modern workshops will
also serve neighbouring countries such as Kenya, Mozambuque and South Africa.
According to Dr. Meru,
the coming of the companies has huge benefits for the country in terms of
creating employment and increasing government's revenue.
